3-d Printed Puzzle

Overview

As a part of a Communications (visualization) course, I worked with a group of classmates to design and print a puzzle of a Canadian fauna—Blanding's turtle. Softwares used include OnShape (for designing) and Z-SUITE (for slicing).

Sketches & Iterations

First iteration

First sketch of overall idea.

Second iteration

Right orthographic view of puzzle for reference.

Dimensions, pegs, inserts and feet parts were added.

Third iteration

The shape of the pegs and inserts were changed to triangles for a smaller overhang angle, which will give the pieces a nicer surface finish and provide better support.

1mm chamfered edges were added for easy assembly and dismantling, especially since the pegs and inserts were given a 0.2mm difference/tolerance for a 'press fit'.
